Back from the dead

Sun Jul 27, 2008, 11:28 AM
Earlier I decided to log in again and saw that it'd been almost 95 weeks since the last time I was here. Wow! One of the major reasons I didn't update this account was that the upload process was so damn tedious. It's good to see that DA has streamlined it a lot more, so now you can see a boatload of new stuff.

I decided to split my gallery into folders by year. Should be easier to browse that way and you'll see how my style's evolving over time.

Of course, I did a lot more than what's in the gallery now, but I don't feel like adding more stuff right now. Probably gonna do that pretty soon, though I will keep putting up only one sample page of each project to keep things down to something manageable.

Right now I have to wait on some artwork before I can finish the design of the "Minions of Ka" graphic novel. The book will premiere at DragonCon. We're way ahead of schedule which is nice. Lettering is finshed, it's just a little design and then pre-press. Arcana will distribute the OGN initially, so keep your eyes out for that. Lettering this book was one of the most rewarding (reading) experiences I've had in a while. Great writing by first-time writers, great art by Chris Moreno who never disappoints but really brings the goods here, great colors by Veronica Gandini when she joined the team to help Chris speed up art production, and hopefully the lettering ain't shabby, either. Christian Beranek managed the production of this book and rocked it as usual.

Anyway, I'll try to stop by DA more often again and would love to talk to some of you guys that I got out of touch with.

This update's been a long time coming

Just a little entry about the uploads I'm doing today and my comics portfolio.

I really need a website. Right now, you can see my comics portfolio over here: [link]

It contains everything from lettering to editing to writing. Thing is, people may want to see just what the stuff looks like that I lettered. So I'm uploading some pages over here that will get linked from the portfolio page.

A proper website would collect all of this in one location, but right now I can't afford to get one. So this will have to do until the financial situation improves.

Oops, forgot to mention TFF came out on 2/1/06!

Whoa, forgot to update here telling y'all that The Flying Friar came out on February 1 of this year and has sold out, getting good reviews across the board!

You can currently find a PDF for purchase at [link] even though I wouldn't have asked for that price point. Well, Rich is trying to reach out to people who aren't normally comics customers with this, so maybe that price makes sense. I have no clue.

More news about the future of this book coming at the end of the month. Pretty exciting stuff if things come together like we hope. And maybe we'll be able to do a second printing soon.

Oh, and the book that I'm mentioning as reading, its full title is this:

The ordeal. The history of torture in criminal procedure of all peoples and times.

It was written by a German dude called Franz Helbing and first published in 1910 in two volumes. This reprint I got (it's in German; dunno if there's an English version) collects both volumes. Really cool stuff for a cultural historian like me. This book gives you two layers of history: The surface level is the subject of the book and the subtext level is Helbing's way to talk about torture and the criminal justice systems before the early 20th century. Fascinating.

Look, Ma! An update!

No idea when The Flying Friar will be out. That sure sucks. I'm told "at the end of January," but until we see Speakeasy books solicited in Diamond's shipping list again, your guess is as good as mine.

I know you've been starving for new shiny lettered pages (and why wouldn't you), so I'm caving to the peer pressure of all 3 of you!

Yes, I'm counting my imaginary friend Brainless Bob among those 3. Don't hate on Bob just because he doesn't have a brain or is imaginary. Poor guy was born that way and didn't get to choose! X(

Anyway, the new pages that are up are from Killer of Demons [link] an awesome mini series written by Chris Yost (go read New X-Men), drawn by my good friend Scott Wegener [link] colored by Brent Wachter (go read Scar Tissue [link]) and lettered & edited by me. We're currently pitching this one to publishers.

Fun project. I enjoyed working on the pitch and am looking forward to working on all three 32 PAGE issues. :D

The usual caveat applies: I only lettered these pages (including cover design).

Aside from KOD, I'm plugging along on HOPE: New Orleans [link] as editor and letterer, again assisted in editorial duties by my bud Jesse Hansen [link] Have lettered a number of pitches for various and sundry (or however you use that expression) and am - gasp - writing a short story for one of Adam's projects, "Blue Sabre"!

You remember Adam, right? Writer of WRECKS [link] ?

Oh, which reminds me! I'm lettering that one as well, finished the pitch pages recently and we're now pitching the series.

If you all behave, I'll show you those pages in the near future. 8-)

Just a quick explanation: The stuff I put up here wasn't drawn by me, I lettered these pages. I'm going to use this account to showcase my comics lettering, nothing more.

It's been years since I seriously sat down to draw something. I guess it's too late to really get back into it now. Not if I want get ahead as a comics writer/editor/letterer.

---

Books I've worked on:

Ronin Studios' "Memories & Echoes: Remembering World War II" (editor/pre-press, writer [2 stories], letterer [3 stories]
[link]

This anthology is printed on demand by ComiXpress and is available since August 2005. $1 from the sale of each book goes to War Child NL, a non-profit organization helping children who have lived through war to cope with their experiences and ensure their healthy mental development.

---

Books I'm working on:

Ronin Studios' "HOPE: New Orleans" (editor/pre-press, letterer)
[link]

An anthology to help the victims of hurricane Katrina. All proceeds will be donated to the Red Cross. It's currently in development an we actually need a few good pencilers for a few of those stories. The book will be out early next year.

---

"The Flying Friar" (copy editor/letterer)

Written by Rich Johnston (of Lying in the Gutters) and drawn by super talented Thomas Nachlik. Based on a historical person, Saint Joseph of Copertino, TFF is a very unique take on one of the greatest comics icons of all time. It should be announced pretty soon and will be available at the end of the year.

---

"Killer of Demons" (editor/letterer)
[link]

Written by Chris Yost (X-23, New X-Men, X-Men Evolution, The Batman) and drawn by my buddy Scott Wegener.

KoD is the timeless story of one man's battle against evil. And it's got BLOOD! And CHICKS! And AXES, and dismemberment and smoking, and White Castles, and DAMN! So much kickass stuff.

KoD will be a three issue mini series that we'll pitch soon to a number of publishers. It's effin' fun, everyone!

Lettering/writing: A few short comics for various anthologies.
